Summary: The Registered Nurse/Staff Trainer is responsible for the
strategic development, implementation, and oversight of nursing
education and training programs for new and existing associates.
This role exercises independent clinical judgment in assessing
learning needs, designing educational materials, and leading
training initiatives to ensure high-quality, compliant care
delivery. Working collaboratively with the Director of Nursing and
the RN team, the RN/Staff Trainer ensures all training programs
align with regulatory requirements, clinical best practices, and
organizational standards. In addition, the Registered Nurse
provides clinical leadership and supervision of unlicensed direct
care associates, ensuring nursing tasks and health-related
activities are performed safely, effectively, and in accordance
with established policies and scope of practice. The RN/Staff
Trainer promotes the health and well-being of individuals through
the application of professional nursing standards and assumes
responsibility for oversight of Individualized Residential
Alternatives (IRAs) serving 5–8 individuals. Participation in a
shared nursing on-call rotation is an essential function of this
position. Duties/Responsibilities: Assist in designing
comprehensive training programs that address the learning needs of
associates, incorporating evidence-based practices and regulatory
requirements. Assist in developing instructional materials,
presentations, and training manuals to support the delivery of
training programs. Conduct engaging and interactive training
sessions for associates, using various teaching methods and
technologies to enhance learning. Offer practical demonstrations
and simulations to reinforce learning and provide opportunities for
hands-on practice. Working with the Nursing Team, track the
progress of associates throughout the training process and provide
feedback and support as needed to ensure competency. Working with
the Nursing and Training Department, continuously review and update
training curriculum to reflect changes in healthcare practices,
technology, and OPWDD regulations. Work closely with nursing
leadership, nursing team, the training department and
administration and other healthcare professionals to ensure
training programs align with organizational goals and standards.
Assess the effectiveness of training programs through evaluations,
surveys, and performance assessments, and adjust as necessary.
Facilitate training sessions for the associates, which includes
orientation, staff meetings and other times when needed. Ensure
program and site operate in conformance with applicable regulations
and policies. Complete annual clinical evaluations of medication
administration Ensure records, files and reports are kept current
and meet regulatory requirements. Develop and implement improvement
and corrective action plans for all surveys. Ensure associates
understand and accurately implement policies and procedures.
Provide support to the Nursing Team as needed. Collaborate closely
with the Training Department to ensure timely submission of
training records and the accuracy of all curriculums. As the
primary instructor, retain responsibility for ensuring required
trainings occur as scheduled, including independently designating
qualified RN trainers to provide coverage in the RN/Staff Trainer’s
absence. Develop a 6 month and annual educational/training project
list that is approved by the supervisor. This project list will be
reviewed during bi-weekly RCS meetings. Provide nursing oversight
for assigned Individualized Residential Alternative(s) (IRA),
ensuring clinical services, staff performance, and health-related
supports meet regulatory and organizational standards. Serve as a
clinical resource to IRA staff, addressing health concerns,
training needs, and care coordination issues as they arise.
Participate in a shared nursing on-call rotation, exercising
independent clinical judgment to respond to urgent health and
safety concerns. Program Standards Promote and ensure the health
and well-being of individuals served. Ensure a person’s health and
medical services are comprehensive, implemented appropriately and
are communicated effectively to maintain the individual’s health.
Ensure an individual’s medical concerns are addressed in a timely
and thorough manner. Ensure individual information is kept up to
date and assessments are completed as required. Ensure medical
equipment, resources and supplies are adequate and well maintained.
Work with the nursing department with assessing, planning,
implementing and evaluating health and medical service delivery for
each person as needed. Ensure information from medical
professionals is obtained, understood and followed. Ensure informed
consents are obtained per regulation Complete and routinely review
medication regime reports as requested with the nursing department.
Complete medication administration reports and procedure errors and
provide follow-up Visit residences minimally weekly. Assist in the
identification and development of new residential service and
support opportunities that provide quality of life choices to
develop and provide training for staff. Be available by phone
during working hours Review and approve administration of new
medications. Assess and provide directions for medical concerns.
Maintain communication and documentation regarding nursing and
health related information Ensure all nursing practices and
training programs comply with federal, state, and OPWDD
regulations, as well as organizational policies. Person Centered
Services Work collaboratively with others to ensure the
individual’s health and wellbeing For IRA assigned to, ensure order
refills, new or changed scripts and discontinued medications are
current. Assist the nursing department with Developing and ensuring
the individual’s Plans of Nursing Services are current and accurate
and ensure associates are knowledgeable and implement the plans as
written. Ensure PONS and IPOPs match Report and document all
individual medical concerns to the appropriate personnel. Assist
the nursing department with ensuring the person’s Individual
Service Plan (ISP), assessments, training and objectives are person
directed and reflect the individual’s quality of life choices and
support systems. Encourage all individuals and their circle of
supports to be active in medical/care decision planning. Respect
the individual’s right to privacy and confidentiality by
appropriate use of written and verbal communication. Physical Plant
and Safety Ensure the site is a safe, clean environment and
immediately address areas of concern. Practice standard precautions
and other appropriate infection control practices. Ensure any
vehicles that you use are maintained per agency policy Ensure
medical equipment and supplies are stored and cleaned properly.
Maintain knowledge of fire evacuation plan and ensure plan is
followed. Required Skills/Abilities: Thorough understanding of
regulations, policies and procedures. Thorough attention to detail.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Excellent
communication, written, presentation and interpersonal skills.
Ability to independently plan, prioritize, and manage professional
responsibilities with minimal supervision. Proficient in Microsoft
Office Suite or related software as needed to complete reports.
Proficient in Station MD, Care Suite, Qualifications Current
licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the relevant jurisdiction.
Bachelor’s degree in nursing; Minimum of 2-3 years of clinical
nursing experience. Experience applying regulatory standards and
professional nursing guidelines to training, supervision, and
program oversight. Strong knowledge of nursing principles,
practices, and procedures. Ability to make independent decisions in
urgent or emergent situation Ability to provide clinical leadership
oversight, and guidance to licensed and unlicensed staff. Physical
Requirements: Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a
computer. Must have the ability to lift up to 15 pounds Authority
and Accountability: People: This position indirectly supervises
Life Coach positions that are medication certified. Operations:
This position operates under the immediate supervision of the
Director of Nursing Budget: This position must adhere to expense
guidelines and programs.
