Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Full Time Days or Nights as scheduled Hours per Shift: 12 hours (3 shifts per week) Experience: 2 years in the Emergency Department License: Active Registered Nurse Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification Must-Have: 1 year of acute hospital experience as a registered professional nurse Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. They apply appropriate interventions and evaluate patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions suitable for managing life-threatening and routine emergency situations. Utilizing the principles of relationship-based care, they alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain/discomfort and safety concerns. They assess the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems. The RN connects with patients and families during triage. They identify the initial management of patients and assign priority of care in accordance with triage standards. The RN establishes rapport, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. They gather and convey information concisely and accurately. The RN conducts primary assessments of critical needs and detects and documents any significant deviations from norms for all age groups. They correctly identify necessary steps/interventions required within acceptable time frames. Using direct observation, patient/family interviews, and data, they conduct secondary assessments to identify contributing factors, health history, and events preceding emergent health events. They assess psychosocial needs and document any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse. The RN reassesses patients to identify responses to treatment and changes in condition, responding appropriately. They encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. They understand their personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. The RN prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments. They make appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. The RN teaches patients about necessary care and healing at home. They assess learning styles and structure sessions to maximize understanding. They ask questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. The RN seeks to understand what is most important to patients and families, acknowledging them as the central focus of care and services. They recognize the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. The RN keeps patients and significant others informed of the care process and anticipates patient/family needs.
